Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Program & Structure

What is the Co-Learning Community?

SOL Learning Center is a co-learning environment designed to support families who are homeschooling or seeking an alternative to traditional school.

We provide:
✔ Structured academic instruction
✔ Project-based learning experiences
✔ A collaborative, multi-age community

Families remain actively involved in their child’s educational journey while we support instruction and implementation.

Where are you located?

SOL Learning Center is located in Clinton, Maryland. Our learning spaces include yurts, outdoor classrooms, and garden areas, creating a unique environment for children to explore and grow beyond traditional classroom settings.

What is a yurt?

A yurt is a round, tent-like structure with a wooden frame and insulated walls, traditionally used by nomadic communities. At SOL Learning Center, our yurt serves as a comfortable and inviting learning space where children can tinker, collaborate, and explore new ideas. It provides an open-concept environment that encourages creativity while offering a cozy and safe space for focused learning.

How are students grouped?

Learners are grouped by age and developmental level:

🌱 Sprouts (Ages 6–8)
🌿 Seedlings (Ages 9–11)
🌸 Buds (Ages 12–14+)

We also incorporate mixed-age learning during project-based activities to encourage mentorship, leadership, and collaboration.

What are the program hours?

🕘 Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Our daily schedule includes:

  • Morning Meeting

  • Core instruction (Literacy Lab / Math Lab / STEM Lab)

  • Project-based learning

  • Closing Circle

6. What are “Labs”?

Our program is organized into three core learning experiences:

✍🏾 Literacy Lab (Mon–Tues)
🔢 Math Lab (Wed–Thurs)
🔬 STEM Lab (Friday)

Each “Lab” is a structured, hands-on learning block designed to build skills and apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

Curriculum & Instruction

What curriculum do you use?

We use a blend of structured curriculum and project-based learning, including:

  • Writing: IEW Structure & Style

  • Grammar: Fix It! Grammar (Seedlings & Buds)

  • Spelling: All About Spelling / structured literacy

  • Math: Dimensions / Singapore Math + IXL

  • Science: Mystery Science (K–5) + Khan Academy (middle school)

Instruction is differentiated to meet each learner’s needs.

Do you provide grades or report cards/transcripts?

We focus on progress monitoring, feedback, and skill development rather than traditional grading.

Families receive:

✔ Observational feedback
✔ Progress updates
✔ Work samples and portfolio support

Is this a full school?

No—SOL Learning Center is a co-learning program, not a traditional school.

Families are responsible for maintaining compliance with Maryland homeschool requirements. We support this process and partner with umbrella programs when needed.
